Coronavirus IPL

CORONOVIRUS LOOMS HEAVY ON THE CASH-RICH IPL

The world has come to a standstill due to the coronavirus threat all over it. On 15th March BCCI decided that the cash-rich IPL will be suspended till 15th April due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) that has now been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Jay Shah the board secretary of the BCCI in a statement released to the media said that BCCI is concerned about its stakeholders and in general the public health of everyone. They are taking the necessary steps to ensure that everyone related to IPL including the fans should have a safe cricketing experience.

CRORES AT STAKE

As the coronavirus spread from China to other parts of the world, threat loomed large over sporting events and large gatherings as the virus could spread easily at such large gatherings. In Europe, it was decided that the UEFA league would go on but with closed stadium doors without any spectators. After a week when the virus had spread more and claimed a huge number of lives authorities decided it would be best to suspend the UEFA league altogether.

In India though, Sourav Ganguly said in a statement on March 6th that IPL would, however, will start on its designated date but with necessary precautions for the players and spectators. Rescheduling or canceling the tournament could lead to a massive hit for the advertising revenues even though all the matches are insured.

The reason why it is difficult to reschedule the cash-rich league or cancel it is that the Star India Network has spent Rs 16,348 crores to acquire the advertising rights for the next five years. If the league gets canceled his year Star network will take a massive blow in terms of advertising revenues.

The tinkering with the IPL schedule 2020 could lead to clashing with the Indian national team’s playing calendar. BCCI did not have any problems with going further with playing the matches as the foreign players also hadn’t expressed any concern over the schedule of the IPL amid the virus outbreak.

CONCERN OF THE FRANCHISES

On 13th March news came in that BCCI had decided to suspend the IPL till 15th April as the virus outbreak had claimed many lives and was rapidly spreading with 103 cases already registered in India. BCCI stated that it will work closely with the Indian government and with the Ministry of Youth affairs and sports and other central and state governments in regard to the outbreak.

The franchises are however concerned over the possibility of commencing the games two weeks later. The Delhi and Maharashtra governments have voiced apprehensions at the sporting bodies. A sketch of the renewed schedule is yet to be shared with the media. there is a possibility that the traditional home-away format may not be done if venues are limited.

EXPLORING OTHER POSSIBILITIES

On 18th March reports came in that BCCI is planning to completely shelve the plan of IPL in the March to May window. The cricket board is considering postponing it by a couple of months and having a full 60 match tournament in the July September window the coronavirus threat will also have subsided by then.

If required, the IPL Games could also be staged partially in India and partially on international grounds. The second edition of IPL held in 2009 had a duration of just 37 days, so if a window is available the tournament can take place.

During the proposed July-September window not much international cricket is to be played. Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup are the two major tournaments to be played during that time. Asia Cup is to take place in September for which dates have not been confirmed yet. The ICC T20 World Cup will commence from the third week of October.

Everyone associated with the IPL, that is the BCCI, the broadcasters, the franchises, the players and most importantly the stakeholders will be hoping and aiming for a full-fledged IPL to take place. The July-September window is the ideal window for this while the world is fighting and tackling the Corona Virus (COVID-19) threat in every way possible.

Retained Players in IPL 2020

All Teams List of Retained Players in IPL 2020 – Star Players

On13th December 2019 the franchises released a final list of the players traded, released and retained. 127 players, which included 35 overseas players were retained by the eight franchises. Let’s take a look at the list of retained players for IPL 2020.

The defending champions of IPL released 12 players from their team and retained 18. They mainly retained their core team, including the four-time IPL winning captain Rohit Sharma. Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan veteran was also retained despite his fitness woes.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

Before the big auction, the three-time champions released only 6 players. The franchise has maintained its philosophy of backing the same set of players. Panned as the ‘Dad’s Army’, the team will be led by veteran wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni. With three titles and five second-place finishes shows the team’s consistency at the IPL cricketing extravaganza, and justifies their idea of supporting experienced players.

The experience of Ambati Raydu, Shane Watson, and Faf Du Plessis at the top provide their batting prowess. MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina strengthen the middle order and control the innings if at all wickets fall early. Their spin trio of Harbhajan Singh, Mitchell Santer, and Ravindra Jadeja deliver excellently at their spin-friendly home ground.

DELHI CAPITALS

Last season, the team saw a dramatic revival after they ended their campaign on third place. They released 9 players and retained 14 players who were mainly their core team members. Their core team remained intact when they retained Upper order batsmen, Shikhar Dhawan, and Prithvi Shaw.

Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were retained from the middle order. To provide depth to bowling pacer Ishant Sharma, Sandeep Lamichhane, Kagiso Rabada, and Amit Sharma were retained.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

With only 7 spots remaining on the squad they only had to recruit substitute players if regular players got injured.

Overseas players retained include batting powerhouse, David Warner and Jonny Bairstow. Captain cool Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey who make up their middle order and bowlers Mohammed Nabi, Bhuwaneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, and Shahbaz Nadeem were retained.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

The two-time champions did not have a great season in the last edition of IPL as they failed to make the playoffs. They pressed the reset button and released some of their overseas players before the auction last year. KKR retained 13 of its players from the previous seasons.

Dinesh Karthik, Shubham Gill, Kuldeep Yadav, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine were the big names to be retained. Lockie Ferguson, Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Sandeep Warrier, Harry Gurney, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, and Shivam Mavi were the other important retained players in IPL 2020.

Punjab Kings

Even though they had a dismal performance last season they chose to retain their core team. Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Mujheeb ur Rahman were among the core members that were retained.

A total number of 14 players were retained. Other members that were retained include Karun Nair, Mohammed Shami, Nicholas Pooran, Mandeep Singh, Hardus Viljoen, Arshdeep Singh, Harpreet Brar, Darshan Nalkande and Murugan Ashwin.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS

Inaugural edition champions, Rajasthan Royals chose to release 11 players including their main player Jaydev Unadakat and retained only 11 players from their squad of last season. Jofra Archer, Steve Smith, Ben Stokes, and Jos Butler were the big names retained, Other players retained include Manan Vohra, Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, Shreyas Gopal, Shashank Singh, Varun Arora, and Mahipal Lomror.

Out of the 13 retained players, only two of them are overseas players, Moeen Ali and veteran AB de Villiers. Captain Virat Kohli was retained too with Yuzvendra Chahal and Parthiv Patel who are the more experienced players in the squad.
